You may be thinking – you can’t have National Simultaneous Storytime for upper years students! Well, we’re here to say – of course you can!
Are you looking for some razzle-dazzle lower years resources? Then make sure you check out Holly’s blog FREE Early Years Activities for National Simultaneous Storytime 2020.
Whitney and Britney the Chicken Divas
This show-stopping story is a hilarious tale of two very colourful birds. Whitney and Britney live a quiet daytime life with the elegant Dora von Dooze, but during the night time they really stir up the stage!
“And what a performance – the crowd’s in a fever! It’s Whitney and Britney, the great Chicken Divas!”
Dora would love to know where the chicks go every night… and with a few sparkling sequins, tiaras and jewels the jig is up! But what will Dora von Dooze do once she discovers their secret stardom?

If you’ve never used a chatterbox before, they are perfect for randomising questions and engaging your students. Simply print one for a whole-class discussion pass it around during carpet time.
Why not print the chatterbox on A5 paper and give to students as a literacy centre activity to promote vibrant discussion about the book? Your students can take it in turn to ‘chatterbox’ their way to a question, and share their answers with the group.
Do your students know social media like the back of their hands? Go with the flow, don’t fight it with our Character Development – Fakebook Page Template!
Your students can use this template to build on the character descriptions found in Whitney and Britney the Chicken Divas. Once they’ve explored their chosen character, why not ask them to add another character to the storyline?
They can develop a new character complete with background information, likes and dislikes, famous quotes and, of course, recent activity!
Your students may not have heard any of Whitney or Britneys’ music, but I bet they have their own favourite bands and musicians!
Connect to your students’ interests by tasking them with a special assignment – to present all they know about their favourite musical act.
They can prepare an oral presentation, poster or written report – or why not ask them to write their own song with the information as lyrics?
Your students can complete our Musical Act Information Report Planner and then present their information in a medium of their choice.
The illustrations in this wonderful storybook are so bright and glitzy, we couldn’t help but feel like we needed to include a creative activity in this blog!
In groups or individually, your students can come up with an animal-themed musical act. Pick a date and time for the premier performance and get advertising with a band poster!
Here are some fun band names to get your students’ brains whizzing!
- Daisy and the Moosical Melody Makers
- Counting Sheep
- Bat Stevens
- Toadally Wild
- The Horse Voices
- Giraffing Me Crazy
You read that heading right!
