Lesson 2: Creating a Narrative Writing Station
A 60 minute lesson in which students will discuss writing goals and explore a classroom writing station.
This lesson plan includes the following resources:
Preparation
Prior to conducting the lesson, create a writing station in the classroom using the attached resources.Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Watch the video of The Rainbow Fishย on YouTube. After watching, ask the students:
- Do you think that authors plan before they write stories?
- What mightย the author of The Rainbow Fish have planned before he started writing?
- What do you think would happen if an authorย didn’t do any planning before writing?
Teacher Instruction
- Askย the students to sit around the classroom writing station (created before the lesson). Explain to the students that, when it is story writing time, the writing station is there to help.
- Ask the students to put on their imaginary ‘author’s hats’.ย Invite the students to discuss what they can see around the writing station. Ask the students:
- How might these posters be helpful when planningย a story?
- Can you see anything that gives you an idea for a story?
- Can you see anything that gives you an idea for a character?
- Select a range of goals for the unit from the Goals โ Writing (Middle)ย and discuss these with the students.ย Allowย the students to ask questions about each goal and encourage them to suggest some success criteria for each. Display these goals in an obvious place in the classroom for the duration of the unit.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Encourage the students to suggest some story ideas, using the writing stimuli available at the writing station. Focus on the setting, characters and plot which could be developed from these ideas.
- Allow the students to work in pairs to list some more story ideas. Encourage each pair to report back the rest of the class and share their ideas.
Wrapping Up
- To review the content of the lesson, ask the students:
- What is the writing station for?
- What are our writing goals?
- How will we know when we have achieved these?
Differentiation
Extending Students
- Encourage more confident students to discuss how they might use the classroom writing station.
Supporting Students
- The writing station can be overwhelming to less confident students. Allow them more time to explore and reiterate the purpose of the writing station to them.
Assessment Strategies
Suggested Assessment Strategies
- used strategic whole class or individual questioning
- observed student participation during learning activities
- recorded student progress on a checklist
- annotated student work samples
- collected and reviewed student work samples
- facilitated whole class or peer feedback sessions
- encouraged student self-reflection
- administered formal assessment tasks.
