Build Phonological Awareness with Alliteration Beginning Sound Picture Sort

This beginning sound picture sort has students saying words that begin with the same letter and learning about alliteration in a fun and hands-on, engaging way.

This resource includes:

  • A set of colourful picture cards featuring familiar objects and animals.
  • Sorting mats already with two pictures on to get the students started.

Students will sort the picture cards based on their initial sounds, creating groups of images that share the same beginning sound—an engaging way to explore alliteration and build phonemic awareness. All of the cards are purely images so students can focus on the auditory component.

What Is Alliteration?

Alliteration is the repetition of the same beginning sound in a series of words. It’s a playful and powerful tool that helps young learners tune into the sounds of spoken language. By identifying and sorting words that start with the same sound, students strengthen their phonological awareness—a foundational skill for reading success.

Introduce your students to the concept of alliteration and beginning sounds with this hands-on picture sort activity. Designed by our experienced teacher team, this resource helps students practice identifying initial sounds while reinforcing their understanding of phonics in a fun and meaningful way.
