Engage students with interactive slides that teach the features of a cohesive sentence through a variety of hands-on activities.
What Is a Cohesive Sentence?
Cohesion is the key to great writing! A cohesive sentence is one that clearly and logically connects to the sentences around it, creating a smooth flow of ideas within a paragraph or text. Teaching students how to use cohesive devices like conjunctions, pronouns and synonyms is an essential part of improving their writing clarity and overall text structure.
This sentence cohesion activity is an entirely digital resource featuring 10 different interactive slides that make cohesive devices engaging and accessible for learners. Students will sort examples, drag and drop linking words, choose the correct cohesive device in multiple-choice questions, and type their own answers directly into the slides. Each activity supports understanding by giving students multiple ways to apply and consolidate what they’ve learned.
The cohesive devices included in this digital resource are:
- Conjunctions
- Pronouns
- Synonyms
- Time Connectives
- Cause and Effect
- Comparative Words
- Adding Words
- Exception Words
This digital resource for teaching cohesive sentence structure downloads as an editable Google Slides file. It’s perfect for teachers who want to improve their students’ sentence fluency and text cohesion without relying on dry worksheets or rote instruction.
Should you require answers, these can be accessed via a separate PDF, available from the drop-down menu on the Download button.
Using This Cohesive Sentence Activity on Your Interactive Whiteboard
Ready to get started with this cohesive sentence activity? Here’s a step-by-step guide to support you through the process:
- Prepare the Slides – Open the presentation on your device and display the slides on your interactive whiteboard. Quickly review the slides to ensure you know how each one functions.
- Introduce the Learning Focus – Explain to the students that they will be learning about (or reviewing) what a cohesive sentence is and why cohesive devices are important in writing.
- Model the First Activity – Work through the first slide as a class. Use this slide as an opportunity to demonstrate how to engage with the interactive tools, e.g. how to drag and drop words into sentences.
- Invite Student Interaction – For the following slides, call students up to your device to complete the next few slides. Encourage the class to help by sharing and justifying their choices.
- Pause for Group Reflection – After every few slides, pause to summarise what types of cohesive devices have been used and how they improved sentence flow. At the end, encourage students to apply cohesive devices in their independent writing.
