Bring your literacy lessons to life with scripts for reader's theatre that boost student confidence and improve reading fluency.
Strengthen Word Recognition and Fluency with Reader’s Theatre
Reader’s theatre is an engaging literacy approach where students perform a script by reading their parts aloud. Because the lines don’t need to be memorised, students can concentrate on reading accurately, using expression and developing confidence as fluent readers. Combining elements of performance with reading practice encourages collaboration, improves comprehension and makes literacy learning fun.
To make it easy to bring reader’s theatre into your classroom, the Teach Starter team has developed a collection of ten readers theatre scripts ideal for Year 5 and Year 6 students. Each script is around two-and-a-half pages long and includes a different number of character roles (four or five parts) so you can choose scripts that best fit your group size. Each one also includes a Flesch–Kincaid reading level, helping teachers to match scripts to student abilities for effective differentiation.
The scripts feature fun scenarios, from championship tennis matching to glitzt awards ceremonies, that will engage and entertain your students as they read. The scripts featured in this pack are:
- Creepy Cat Club
- Dog Park Days
- Game, Set, Match!
- Hansel, Gretel and Nancy
- Mighty Maree
- My Dad, the Superhero
- The 45th Annual Acting Awards
- The Jesting Archaeologist
- The Muddy Footprint
- The Science Experiment

The Benefits of Reader’s Theatre Scripts for Students
Reader’s theatre scripts offer a wide range of benefits that make them a valuable addition to any literacy program. Some of these include:
- Improves Reading Fluency – By repeatedly reading their parts, students practise phrasing, pacing and expression, which helps them become smoother, more confident readers.
- Boosts Comprehension – Performing a script requires students to understand the story, characters and dialogue, deepening their understanding of how narratives work.
- Builds Confidences – Speaking in front of others helps students overcome shyness, develop clear speech and gain pride in their reading ability.
- Encourages Teamwork – Because reader’s theatre is a group activity, students learn to listen, take turns and support each other as they work toward a shared goal.
- Connects Reading with Creativity – Students get to interpret characters, explore emotion and even suggest gestures or movements, combining literacy with creative expression.
