A mathematics investigation involving financial planning, embedded in a real-world context.

This open-ended mathematics investigation has been designed to deepen students’ understanding of simple financial planning and timetables.

In this investigation, the students have been given \$100 to spend at Leisure Land, a local amusement park. Using the map, price lists and planning worksheets provided in the resource, they must complete a simple spending plan and timetable for their day.

During the investigation, students will be required to make decisions about rides, entertainment, food, drink and souvenirs. They will then need to modify these in accordance with their spending allowance. They will also be required to use mental and written strategies to perform calculations.

This teaching resource includes:

• teacher notes, detailing a range of important information about the investigation
• a detailed description of the investigation for students, including step-by-step instructions
• Leisure Lad map and price lists
• various recording worksheets and planning templates
• a checklist for students
• reflection questions.

This resource has been FANTASTIC for my grade 2/3 class. They loved pretending they were off to Leisure Land and it was a great culminating activity for money and time!! We reflected on which parts we found hard and what we enjoyed.

It is so rewarding to hear this feedback, Jaclyn! Our goal is to create resources that engage and excite the students, so it is wonderful to hear how much your class enjoyed this investigation. We hope to create more of these to add to our growing collection. Kind regards, Steph
