Get Students Converting Fractions, Decimals and Percentages

When it comes to representations of parts of a whole, there is a lot for our students to remember! Not only do they have to grasp the separate concepts of fractions, decimals and percentages, but they also have to be able to understand the equivalence of these and convert between them!

This handy match-up game has been created by the experienced team of teachers at Teach Starter to give your students practice converting between fractions, decimals, percentages and visual representations. The resource contains 56 cards: 14 fraction cards, 14 decimal cards, 14 percentage cards and 14 visual representation cards. Students are required to match all four representations of the same part of a whole together. For example:

  • 10% = 1/10 = 0.1 = one part out of 10 shaded

To play, place the cards, face up, on the floor. (Note: Cards can be placed face down for a more challenging version.) Start with a percentage card, e.g. 10%. Look for the decimal card, fraction card and visual model card that belong with your chosen percentage card. Put these together in a pile. Continue playing until all cards have been matched.

This maths game downloads as a full-colour printable PDF, a black-and-white printable PDF or editable Google Slides version containing both the full-colour and the black-and-white versions. Instructions on how to play the game are also included in the download.

Multiple Options for This Fractions, Decimals and Percentages Game

This versatile maths game can be played in a variety of ways in your classroom, depending on your students’ needs. Here are some suggested ways that you might like to implement this resource in your classroom:

  • Whole-Class Game – Provide each student with a card. (Note: Depending on the number of students in your class, you may need to remove a few sets of matching cards from the pack.) See how quickly the students can find the students who have a card that belongs with theirs. Once they have found all four members of their group, they must sit down together on the carpet.
  • Pair Card Games – Provide the resource to pairs of students. Have them play matching card games such as Memory, Go Fish or Snap. Games can be altered so the students are looking for all four concepts with the same value or just pairs (if they need an easier version).
  • Fast Finisher Challenge – Provide the set of cards to individual students as a fast finisher challenge. Students might like to time themselves to see how quickly they can sort all the fraction, decimal, percentage and visual respresentation cards into the correct groups.
