High‑Frequency Word Worksheets for Prep

Help your Prep students develop confidence with high‑frequency words using this engaging collection of practice pages. Designed for classrooms following a structured literacy approach, these worksheets give children opportunities to recognise, read, and write common Prep high‑frequency words after they have been explicitly taught during lessons.

This resource focuses on the high‑use words young learners meet often in early readers. Once children have been introduced to each word through modelling and discussion, these worksheets provide meaningful practice that supports accuracy, fluency, and quick word recognition.

Meaningful High‑Frequency Word Practice After Explicit Teaching

These worksheets are designed to reinforce learning, —not to replace direct instruction. Each activity is intended for use only after students have explored the target words through teaching, modelling, and guided practice. The worksheet pack is also divided into heart words and flash words. Hear words are tricky words that may have an element the students need to learn by heart. Whereas flash words should be easily decoded.

Students will have the chance to:

  • Find and colour high‑frequency words in simple lists or clusters to strengthen visual recognition.
  • Read the words in isolation, helping develop automatic recall.
  • Practise handwriting by tracing and writing each word, supporting correct spelling and muscle memory.
  • Apply their learning independently, helping bridge the gap between explicit teaching and confident use in reading and writing tasks.

This pathway ensures students receive structured, supportive practice aligned with the principles of structured literacy.
