Inventing Alliteration Worksheets

Support young writers as they explore beginning sounds and playful language with this Inventing Alliterations worksheet set. Students look at strips of pictures, colour the images that begin with the same sound, and then use those words to write their own alliteration sentence. This helps learners practise initial sounds, phonemic awareness and creative sentence writing.

Each worksheet features themed picture strips, from silly sports and animal adventures to nature scenes, character creation and food favourites. Students identify words with matching beginning sounds (like ball, balloons, boys or hippo, horse, hammer) and use them to invent fun alliteration sentences.

How These Worksheets Build Literacy Skills

Help students understand that alliteration happens when words begin with the same sound. These worksheets break the skill into simple, child‑friendly steps that support early phonics, vocabulary development and creative writing.

Simple steps for modelling:

  • Say each picture aloud — emphasise the beginning sound.
  • Colour the matching sounds — identify which words start the same way.
  • Think aloud — model how to choose words for an alliteration sentence.
  • Write the sentence — use the coloured words to create a silly, sound‑filled line.
  • Let students try — guide them through the next picture strip independently.
