Number Recognition Made Fun With This Set of Craft Activities

This set of five engaging, printable craft activities will help your students reinforce their number recognition skills for numbers 1 – 10 while practising their fine motor skills.

Students colour and cut out the base picture and the number of objects they would like to place on their picture. They then cut out and fill in the provided ten frame and complete the sentence above it. Students glue all the pieces onto a piece of cardboard to complete the craft!

This craft activity pack includes the following templates:

  • Biscuit jar and biscuits
  • Ladybug and spots
  • Outer space and planets
  • Pond and frogs
  • Fishbowl and fish

Why is Number Recognition Important?

Number recognition is an essential maths skill for Foundation students. It is fundamental for later maths learning such as patterns, counting and critical thinking. Learning to recognise numbers also promotes a general understanding of the world around students.

While completing this fun craft activity, students will hone their fine motor skills while practising many number recognition skills, including:

  • Writing numbers
  • Connecting quantities and numbers
  • Representing numbers with objects
  • Recognising a quantity of objects in an organized arrangement (ten frame)
  • Counting
  • One-to-one correspondence

Craft Instructions

Print the template to the craft of your choice. To complete this craft, students will:

  1. Color and then cut out the base picture and the number of objects desired.
  2. Glue the objects to the base picture.
  3. Fill the ten frame with circles that match the number of glued objects. Then, write the correct number in the sentence above the ten frame.
  4. Cut out the rectangle with the ten frame and sentence in it.
  5. Glue all the craft pieces onto a separate piece of paper to complete the activity!
