Perimeter and Area Task Cards for Meaningful Maths Discussions

These perimeter and area task cards provide engaging prompts that encourage students to think deeply about measurement concepts and explain their mathematical reasoning. Through a variety of visual models, students explore perimeter and area while discussing strategies, comparing solutions and justifying their thinking.

The cards include a range of challenges featuring rectangles, squares and composite figures, as well as tasks involving missing dimensions, perimeter calculations and area calculations. Students are encouraged to analyse shapes, draw comparisons and investigate multiple solution pathways.

Each task card is accompanied by discussion prompts that encourage students to explain how they determined the perimeter or area, compare different solution strategies, create shapes with matching or different perimeters and areas, solve problems involving missing dimensions, write their own perimeter and area word problems and justify and defend their mathematical thinking.

Flexible Ways to Use These Perimeter and Area Task Cards

These task cards can be used in a variety of classroom settings:

  • Number Talks – Facilitate rich whole-class mathematical discussions.
  • Maths groups – Encourage collaborative problem-solving.
  • Warm-up activities – Introduce perimeter and area concepts before lessons.

The open-ended prompts make this resource ideal for developing confidence, reasoning and conceptual understanding.
