Persuasive Prompts to Support Writing Confidence
With NAPLAN fast approaching, many teachers like to provide their students with a few opportunities to practise short, sharp writing tasks.
This set of five NAPLAN-style persuasive prompts has been designed by our team for this very purpose. Each prompt offers two simple choices, reducing cognitive load and encouraging students to focus on crafting strong arguments rather than wrestling with topic selection.
The persuasive prompts included in this pack are:
- School uniforms or free dress?
- Group work or individual work?
- Digital learning or paper-based learning?
- Team sports or individual sports?
- Screen time or outdoor time?
This resource downloads as a quick-print PDF or editable Google Slides file
Whether you’re using this resource for NAPLAN preparation or as part of your persuasive writing unit, these prompts are sure to give your students a solid starting point for creating a well-structured and highly convincing persuasive text.
Ways to Use These Persuasive Practice Activities
These persuasive practice activities can be used in a variety of ways to help your students fine-tune their persuasive writing skills. Here are some ideas you might like to consider in your planning:
- Verbal Debates – Choose a prompt, then let the students pick which option they prefer. Conduct a class discussion, allowing students the opportunity to verbally share their viewpoint. This approach is ideal for students who need to verbalise their ideas before writing.
- Modelled Planning and Writing – Choose a prompt, then project it on your interactive whiteboard. Conduct a class discussion that allows students to share their viewpoints verbally. Show how to brainstorm arguments, compile evidence, then write a text following the appropriate structural conventions.
- Persuasive Devices Focus – Choose a prompt, then place the students in small groups. Assign each group a persuasive device, e.g. rhetorical questions, modality, emotive language. Have the students brainstorm examples of their device that could be used in a text for the chosen prompt.
