What Are Good Topics for Persuasive Writing?
As teachers, we know it's important to give our students the chance to practice writing in a variety of formats, and taking the time to practise persuasive writing isn't just important because it's likely to come up when they sit their NAPLAN tests!
When students can spend time writing persuasive essays, they are building a variety of skills. They get to practise organising their opinions and feelings in written form so they can better communicate with others. They're also learning how to research facts that will help them make more compelling arguments in their texts.
With that in mind, we find that good topics for persuasive writing practise draw from our students' own lives.
These topics provide students with a much-needed jumping off point to encourage them to write, and they're able to draw on personal opinions and feelings. After all, they say to write what you know, and it's significantly easier for young students to start from a place of understanding when they're still learning to craft a persuasive essay or speech.
You'll find this collection is full of kid-friendly topics that relate to events and experiences your students may be familiar with, such as their feelings about having a pet, their favourite book or which season of the year is the best.
