Poetry Analysis Made Simple for Primary Students
Poetry analysis is an important literacy skill that enables students to learn how poets use language, structure and literary devices to communicate ideas. Sourcing age-appropriate poetry for use in a primary school classroom is not always easy, though… That’s where Teach Starter comes in!
This resource pack includes five age-appropriate poems written by our experienced teacher team. The resource also features a two-page analysis worksheet to guide students through analysing the purpose, audience, structure, sound elements and imagery of the sample poems.
The children’s poems featured in this pack are:
- The Park
- Spring Is Here
- The Waterfall
- Sammy the Snake
- The Troll
This resource downloads as a full-colour or black-and-white printable PDF. The worksheets can also be downloaded as an editable Google Slides file.
This resource offers a flexible and easy-to-implement approach to teaching poetry. The generic worksheet can be used with the included poems or applied to any poem used in the classroom, making it a valuable addition to literacy centres, independent work and assessment tasks.
Analyse Poetry Through Engaging Classroom Activities
This set of children’s poems can be used in a variety of ways to support your teaching of poetry and poetic devices.
Here’s how you might use this resource in different ways in your classroom:
- Whole-class poetry study – Choose one of the poems from the resource to read together as a class. Afterwards, project the worksheet onto your interactive whiteboard and model how to complete it.
- Small-group literacy rotations – Assign different poems to groups for collaborative analysis. After the groups have completed the worksheet, have them compare themes, structures and language choices.
- Independent learning tasks – Provide the students with a poem and worksheet for individual practice. This could be used as a source of evidence of students’ ability to identify poetic features such as imagery and sound devices.
