Phonemic Awareness + Rhyming Odd One Out

Our Rhyming Odd One Out resource is designed to make phonics fun, interactive, and engaging for little learners. Students select a card, observe the pictures, and listen carefully to the sounds of the words. Their challenge is to identify the odd one out—the picture that does not rhyme with the others, and mark it using a peg or counter.

This activity is entirely auditory, with no written words, ensuring children rely on listening skills and sound recognition. It’s a playful way to build phonological awareness while keeping learning hands-on and enjoyable. By focusing on sounds rather than text, this resource supports diverse learners, including those at the very beginning of their literacy journey.

  • Children choose a card featuring three or four picture prompts.
  • They say the words aloud, listening closely to the rhyming sounds.
  • Using a peg or counter, they mark the image that doesn’t rhyme.
  • The activity encourages auditory discrimination, critical thinking, and vocabulary development.

Curriculum Connection: Phonics and Word Knowledge

This resource directly links to the Australian Curriculum: English – Phonics and Word Knowledge strand, where students are expected to recognise and generate rhyming words. Through repeated practice, children strengthen their ability to:

  • Identify rhyming patterns in spoken language
  • Develop sound awareness essential for reading and spelling
  • Build confidence in oral language and listening skills

Teachers can use this resource in small groups, literacy rotations, or one-on-one sessions to reinforce foundational phonics skills.
