Make Sentences Flow with Sentence Cohesion Worksheets

Cohesion is a vital component of any text. When writers understand how to connect their ideas smoothly, their writing becomes easier to follow and more enjoyable to read. This is why we teach cohesive devices to our students!

This sentence cohesion worksheet pack has been designed by our team to provide targeted practice in using cohesive devices to link ideas clearly and effectively. The resource includes five carefully designed worksheets that build students’ confidence with this important writing skill. Across the set, students will:

  • Combine two main ideas using coordinating conjunctions.
  • Avoid repetition using synonyms.
  • Replace repeated nouns with pronouns.
  • Use intended repetition for emphasis.
  • Connect ideas using word associations.

Each worksheet features a mix of explanation, examples and short exercises, making them ideal for independent work, group tasks or teacher-led revision.

This sentence cohesion worksheet pack downloads as a printable PDF or editable Google Slides document. Answers are included to make marking quick and easy.

These worksheets will help your students write cohesive sentences with confidence by linking their ideas using a range of tools and techniques.

Get Your Students Writing Sentences with Cohesive Devices

These cohesive sentences worksheets can be used flexibly across different parts of the school day to reinforce cohesive writing skills. Here are some ideas you might like to consider:

  • Whole-Class Instruction – Choose a worksheet to use as a focused mini-lesson on a particular cohesive device. Project the worksheet on the board and model how to complete the first few questions, thinking aloud as you go. Then, allow students to complete the rest independently or in pairs.
  • Literacy Rotations – Incorporate the worksheets into your literacy group rotations. Assign different worksheets to different groups depending on their current writing goals or areas for improvement. This allows for targeted differentiation and skill development.
  • Homework Tasks – Send a worksheet home to consolidate classroom learning. The clear explanations and examples make them easy for students to complete independently with minimal support. This also allows parents and carers to stay across the learning taking place in the classroom.
