A Subject Verb Agreement Poster to Support Grammar Lessons

Understanding subject-verb agreement can be tricky for young learners. That’s why Teach Starter has created this clear and visually engaging subject-verb agreement poster for primary school students!

This subject-verb agreement poster explains how, in sentences, singular subjects must be matched with a singular form of the accompanying verb, and plural subjects must be matched with a plural form of the verb. Here’s an example:

  • Jessie wears a hat. (Singular subject = Jessie, singular verb = wears).
  • We wear our hats. (Plural subject = we, plural verb = wear).

Perfect for primary classrooms, this poster makes a great visual reminder for students when they are checking whether the subjects and verbs in their sentences agree.

This resource is available as a full-colour PDF or editable Google Slides file. If your school has limited colour printing, we recommend printing in greyscale on coloured paper. You may wish to enlarge the poster so that it stands out more clearly on your classroom wall.

Using This Subject Verb Agreement Poster for Kids

This subject-verb agreement poster for kids is a versatile tool that can be used in various ways to reinforce learning. Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

  • Classroom Display – Create a classroom display focusing on parts of speech and sentence structure. Include the subject-verb agreement poster to provide students with a constant reminder of this important grammatical convention.
  • Teaching Aid – Use the poster during explicit grammar lessons to introduce or reinforce subject-verb agreement rules with clear examples. After, have students create their own examples and explain why the subject and verb agree.
  • Writing and Editing Scaffold – Place the poster in a writing or editing station where students check their own work. Alternatively, provide students with a copy so they can refer to it when completing independent writing tasks.
