Engage in a mathematics investigation about measuring time, embedded in a real-world context.
The Sands of Time Maths Investigation for Measuring Duration
Understanding time as a measurable quantity can be challenging for students. The sands of time investigation introduces this concept in a meaningful, real‑world way by encouraging students to design, test and refine their own sand timers.
In this open‑ended task, students aim to create a timer that runs for as close to one minute as possible. As they measure, record results and make adjustments, students build a deeper understanding of duration, consistency in measurement and the importance of accuracy. The investigative nature of the task promotes mathematical reasoning, creativity and perseverance.
This investigation is naturally inclusive, allowing students to work at their own level while still being challenged and supporting rich mathematical discussion and reflection.
