Teach Starter Publishing
12 x lessons | Suitable for years: 5 - 6

This Visual Arts unit investigates the Elements of Visual Art. Demonstrations and artistic techniques are explored, with particular attention given to line, shape, form, colour, texture and space.

It consists of 12 lessons ranging from 60–90 minutes duration.

The sequence of lessons and suggested time frames should be regarded as a guide only; teachers should pace lessons in accordance with the individual learning needs of their class.

Teachers are encouraged to collect samples of students’ work throughout the unit to add to a visual arts portfolio. These can be used to assess students’ understanding of the unit objectives.

Preparing for Learning

This Visual Arts unit provides excellent opportunities for cross-curricular integration. Look for ways to meaningfully integrate the content of the unit with other learning areas, e.g. Literacy and Science.
Prior to commencing the unit, develop a classroom display to showcase the students’ art. Display word wall vocabulary and educational posters for students to engage with throughout the unit to stimulate their learning. For examples of additional teaching resources to display in your classroom, browse the Visual Arts collection on the Teach Starter website.

Many of the resources that accompany this unit plan need to be prepared prior to teaching. For this reason, teachers are advised to browse through all lessons before commencing the unit.

For some of the lessons in this unit, students explore mixed media at various stages. Additional adult supervision at some of these stages would be beneficial.
