Research and celebrate an inspiring author during Read Across America Week with this speech-writing task.
Celebrate Inspirational Authors During Read Across America Week!
Great authors have the ability to transport us into new worlds through the creation of rich characters and compelling storylines. These authors capture our hearts and minds… as we read their books, we grow as people and are inspired to take on new challenges.
Read Across America week is headed our way! What better way to celebrate this event than to research authors who inspire us through the literature they create?
This speechwriting task requires students to write and present an informative and descriptive speech about an author who inspires them. They must consider and explain why their chosen author (and the stories they write) inspires them more than others! Students are required to plan, draft and rehearse their speech before presenting it to the class.
Students are prompted to consider the following when researching their chosen author.
- Who is the author, and what kinds of stories or books do they write?
- What important life experiences or accomplishments shaped this author?
- What do you find inspiring about this author and their writing?
- How has this author’s work impacted readers or literature as a whole?
The resource download contains everything your students will need to complete this project, including:
- Student instructions
- Research graphic organizers
- Speechwriting templates
- Rehearsal checklist
- Achievement rubric
Further Extend This Inspirational Authors Project
Looking for ways to take this inspirational authors project to the next level? Here are some simple yet effective ideas from our team:
- Create a Visual Aid – Have the students design a poster or slideshow featuring key quotes, images of the author and highlights of their life and works to accompany their speech.
- Develop a Booklet – Get the students to create a professionally styled booklet showing a timeline of the author’s major works and interesting facts about their writing career.
- Video Documentary – Have the students create a short video combining narration, images and clips about the author’s life and works to share with the class.
