Show Similarity and Difference with Comparison Words

Comparison words are words and phrases used to show similarity and difference in ideas – terms like similarly, in contrast, however and on the other hand. When students learn to use these well, their writing instantly becomes more cohesive, more mature and more purposeful.

This worksheet pack has been created by the Teach Starter team to help your students use comparison words in texts such as narratives, information reports and persuasive texts. This resource includes nine thoughtfully sequenced worksheets that guide students from simple sentence-level activities to longer paragraphs and extended passages. This helps students to build up their confidence with comparison words step by step.

Some of the activities you will find in this comparison words worksheet pack include:

  • Cloze passages
  • Joining sentences using comparison words
  • Identifying comparison words in context
  • Writing a text using comparison words
  • And many more!

This comparison words worksheet pack downloads as an easy-print PDF or an editable Google Slides file. Answers are included in both file options.

By engaging with this resource, your students will learn how to show similarities and differences in ideas using a range of comparative words and phrases.

Compare and Contrast Words to Enhance Student Writing

Learning about compare and contrast words can significantly enhance student writing, helping them write with greater clarity and cohesion. When used correctly, writing becomes:

  • More cohesive, as ideas are linked instead of listed.
  • More sophisticated, as connections reflect deeper thinking.
  • More organized, as connectives guide the reader through the text.
  • More engaging, as sentences flow naturally from one idea to the next
