Homophones Task Cards for 3rd and 4th Grades

Homophones are words that sound the same but have different spellings and meanings. It’s no wonder that these tricky little words are some of the most commonly misspelled words in our students’ writing! To help our students associate the correct homophone with the correct spelling, it is vital to expose our students to these words as much as possible!

This set of 24 task cards has been designed by our expert teacher team to help your students make connections between common homophones, their correct definition and their correct spelling. Students are required to:

  1. Choose a task card and read out the sentence.
  2. Work out the meaning of the underlined homophone in the sentence.
  3. Write the definition of the underlined homophone on the recording sheet.

These homophones task cards can be downloaded as a full-color PDF or an editable Google Slides file. Each file contains:

  • An instruction page
  • 24 task cards
  • A 2-page recording sheet
  • An answer key

This resource would make a great addition to any lesson focused on reviewing common homophones, their definitions and their correct spelling.

Why Not Play Some Homophones Games?

They say there’s more than one way to peel an apple…. And there’s definitely more than one way to use our homophones task cards in your classroom! Here are some suggestions if you’re looking to shake things up a little during your vocabulary lessons:

SCOOT!

Place the cards around the classroom in an accessible location. Send pairs or small groups of students to one particular card as a starting location. Give the students a couple of minutes to answer the question on their task card. After a few minutes, shout out, “SCOOT!” Students then move on to the next card. Continue playing until all cards have been answered.

Show Me!

Provide the students with mini whiteboards and markers. Show them the task cards in turn. Have the students write the homophone from the sentence on their board, making sure to spell it correctly based on the context in which it was used. When the students are finished, say “Show Me!” Students can turn around their boards, allowing you to monitor who requires additional help with the concept.

Relay Race

A twist on “Show Me!” Divide the class into two teams. Choose a card and read out the sentence. The first two students in each team must run to the board and write the homophone from the sentence, making sure to spell it correctly. The first person to do so wins a point for their team.

Print the task cards on cardstock for durability. Place them together in a large envelope for safekeeping.

As this download contains an answer sheet, we recommend printing one copy of the file, then removing the answer sheet before making any copies.
