Using Diphthong Vowel Team Fluency Chart Word Lists

Fluency charts are an effective tool to use in the classroom for improving students’ reading and speaking abilities. This particular resource features lists of words that 2contain various diphthongs to aid in the practise of reading words that include these complex graphemes. Diphthongs are vowel sounds that glide from one vowel sound to another within a single syllable, such as ‘oi’ in ‘boil’ or ‘ou’ in ‘cloud’

This download includes a set of four posters that include the following diphthong vowel teams:

  • ow/ou
  • aw/ou
  • oi/oy
  • oo/ew/ue

How to Use Fluency Charts in the Classroom

This list of words can be used in several ways in the classroom, including the following:

  • Model proper pronunciation – model the correct pronunciation of each diphthong and demonstrate how to read the words on the list. Pay attention to the gliding movement between the vowel sounds in the diphthongs.
  • Guided practice – engage in guided practice as a class and read the words together. Encourage students to follow your lead, paying attention to the diphthong sounds.
  • Partner or small group activities – divide the class into pairs or small groups. Have students take turns reading the sentences or phrases to each other, providing opportunities.
  • Independent practice – allow students to practice individually. Provide them with a mirror and allow them to practice the pronunciation of each of the words. Encourage them to focus on the mouth articulation of the diphthongs in each word.
