Start at the Beginning With Our Initial Blends Game

Turn phonics practice into a lively classroom activity with this Initial Blends Game! This resource is designed to help students recognize and reinforce beginning blends such as st, cl, fl, sw, and many more. 

Each bingo board features a variety of colorful images that represent words starting with these blends. As you reveal each blend, students scan their boards for a matching picture, building phonemic awareness while having fun. With just a little prep, this game is ready for small groups, literacy centers, or whole-class play. It’s an engaging way to support early reading development through play-based learning!

This initial blends game includes:

Playing This Phonics Activity

This engaging phonics activity is ready in no time! Here’s how to get started.

Prepare Materials:

  1. Download the initial blends game in the format of your choice. 
  2. Print the bingo boards and calling cards. We recommend using cardstock for longevity.
  3. Cut apart the calling cards and boards, and then mix them up.

Play the Game:

  1. Give each student a different Bingo board and some counters. 
  2. Display or call out an initial blend card. 
  3. Students will look for the image that contains the initial blend on the card, and mark it with a counter if they have it. 
  4. Students get a Bingo when they cover 3 spaces in a row, a column, or diagonally.
