Multiplication and Division Task Card Activity

Understanding multiplication and division requires more than simply recalling number facts. Students benefit from exploring mathematical concepts through multiple representations, helping them connect abstract calculations with visual models and real-world contexts.

This multiplication and division task card resource has been designed to strengthen student understanding by encouraging them to represent each problem in four different ways: a number sentence, an array, a picture and a word problem. This approach helps students think flexibly about mathematical relationships, make connections between concepts and develop stronger reasoning skills.

The resource includes:

  • A reusable think board template
  • 12 multiplication task cards
  • 12 division task cards
  • A student recording sheet
  • A teacher answer key

By working through the think board, students move beyond finding the correct answer and instead focus on explaining and demonstrating their mathematical thinking. This helps improve conceptual understanding, problem-solving confidence and mathematical communication skills while providing meaningful multiplication and division practice.

Creative Ways to Use This 3rd Grade Multiplication and Division Resource

This 3rd grade multiplication and division resource is highly versatile and can be incorporated into your math program in a variety of engaging ways, including:

  • Math Investigation Stations – Place task cards and think boards at a dedicated math station where students rotate through challenges and record their thinking.
  • Problem-Solving Warm-Ups – Begin each math lesson with a single task card and have students complete one section of the think board before discussing solutions as a class.
  • Math Detective Challenge – Have students complete the picture, array or word problem sections only, then swap with a partner who must determine the original number sentence.

These flexible activities make it easy to revisit multiplication and division concepts throughout the year while giving students repeated opportunities for meaningful multiplication and division practice.
