What Is Etymology?

Etymology is the study of the history and origins of words and how their meanings have changed over time. Although it may not sound like the most exciting of topics, etymology can be a powerful source of knowledge for our students!

In many elementary classrooms, students encounter increasingly complex words when reading texts across the curriculum. It is common to hear students confidently decode a word but struggle to explain its meaning. Teaching etymology bridges this gap by helping students recognize familiar word parts, identify relationships between words and make informed predictions about meaning.

Learning about word origins is far more than a vocabulary activity. It is a transferable literacy skill that supports learning across multiple subject areas and helps students become more confident readers, writers and thinkers.

Here are some examples of how learning about word origins can support your students:

• Reading Comprehension – Knowing the meaning of common roots can help students work out the meaning of unfamiliar words independently, rather than relying solely on context clues.
• Spelling Accuracy – When students start to recognize the common patterns, roots and word families that appear in many English words, the chances of spelling a new word accurately are greatly increased.
• Writing Sophistication – Learning groups of related words that share a common root can improve writing outcomes by giving students access to more precise and sophisticated vocabulary.
