Lesson 5: Exploring Descriptive Language in Context
A 60 minute lesson in which students will identify and explore how descriptive language in used in narrative texts.

Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Choose a descriptive passage from a well-known piece of children’s literature to read to the students. Some excerpts to consider include:
- the description of the Grand High Witch fromย The Witches
- the description of the Great Hall from the ย Harry Potter series
- the description of the land of Narnia fromย The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
- After reading, ask the students:
- What type of words were used in the passage?
- Why do you think the author chose these types of words?
- If these words were removed from the passage, what might be the effect of this?
Teacher Instruction
- Revisit slides 12, 14 and 15 of the Writing Narrative Texts PowerPoint. Ensure that the students understand the definitions of a noun, adjective, verb, adverb, adjectival phrase and adverbial phrase.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Provide each student with a copy of the Identifying Descriptive Language Worksheets – Nouns, Adjectives, Verbs and Adverbs. Read through the four texts together as a class, as well as the instructions. Answer any questions the students may have about the tasks.
- Allow the students to work in pairs to complete the worksheets. Monitor and support the students as required.
Wrapping Up
- Discuss the answers of the worksheets as a class. Allow the students to correct their own work so that they may monitor how well they have understood the lesson’s objective.

- Allow more capable students to work individually on the worksheets, rather than in pairs.
Supporting Students
- Allow any students who are finding the worksheets challenging to work in a small group with a teacher or teacher aide.

Hi there, Teacher Instruction tells you to look at Slide 15, 19 and 20, yet there is only 18 slides…not sure if there is a couple missing?
