Lesson Plan
Lesson 14: Narrative Skills – Planning a Story
A 60 minute lesson in which students will independently plan a setting, characters and plot for a narrative text.
This lesson plan includes the following resources:
Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Explain to the students that they are now going to plan a setting, characters and plot for their own narrative text.
Teacher Instruction
- Display slide 5 of the Narrative Writing Visual Prompts Presentation. Encourage the students to suggest a possible setting, some characters and a potential plot for the image on the slide.
- Read through the class discussion questions on slide 6. Explain to the students that these questions are intended to help them think about what might happen in a narrative text based on the visual prompt.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Explain to the students that they are going to plan a narrative text based around ‘The Animal Games’ image.
- Provide the students with a copy of the Narrative Writing Planning Template. Shade the orientation title in green, the complication, events and climax titles in red and the resolution title in blue. Explain to the students that this is going to help them identify the beginning, middle and end of their story.
- Monitor and support the students as they independently plan their narratives.
Wrapping Up
- Check that all students have finished their plans so that they are ready to commence writing in the following lesson.
Differentiation
Extending Students
- Encourage strong writers to challenge themselves by coming up with an original idea for their narrative, rather than using the stimulus image.
Supporting Students
- Support weaker writers through the planning process, so they have a clear direction for writing.
Assessment Strategies
Suggested Assessment Strategies
- used strategic whole class or individual questioning
- observed student participation during learning activities
- recorded student progress on a checklist
- annotated student work samples
- collected and reviewed student work samples
- facilitated whole class or peer feedback sessions
