Lesson 15: Narrative Skills – Independent Writing
A 60 minute lesson in which students will independently write a narrative, using appropriate text structure, language and features.
This lesson plan includes the following resources:
Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Explain to the students that they are now going to write their narrative text independently.
Teacher Instruction
- Remind the students to apply their knowledge of narrative text structure, language and features when writing their narrative.
- Project ‘The Animal Games’ narrative prompt on slide 5 of the Narrative Writing Visual Prompts Presentation on the board for the students to refer to during the writing process.
- Provide the students with a copy of the Narrative Writing Planning Template, Narrative Writing Checklist – Lower Years or the Narrative Writing Checklist – Structure, Language and Features to refer to during the writing process.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Monitor and support the students as they write their narratives. Teachers may wish to set a time limit for writing, or they may allow the students to take as much time as they need to complete the task. Ensure that the students know exactly how much time they have and provide regular reminders of how much time is remaining.
Wrapping Up
- Once the students have finished writing their narratives, encourage them to proofread and edit their work.
- Teachers may wish to collect this piece of writing and use it to assess students’ understanding of the unit objectives. The Narrative Writing – Assessment Rubric may be a helpful tool for teachers during this process.
Differentiation
Extending Students
- Encourage fast finishers to make improvements to their narrative once they have finished their first draft.
Supporting Students
- Support weaker writers through the writing process, providing regular feedback and encouragement.

Suggested Assessment Strategies
- used strategic whole class or individual questioning
- observed student participation during learning activities
- recorded student progress on a checklist
- annotated student work samples
- collected and reviewed student work samples
