Lesson 6: Skip Counting by 10s
A 60 minute lesson in which students will explore skip counting by 10s.
This lesson plan includes the following resources:
Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Students watch and sing along to the Counting by 10s Song video on YouTube. At the end of the video, ask the students:
- What type of skip pattern did we sing along to?
- As we were counting, how many numbers did we skip at a time?
- When might you use skip counting by 10s in everyday life?
- Provide each student with ten Unifix cubes. Ask the students to use their cubes to make their own ‘snake’. Once the students have finished, invite them to sit in a circle on the floor. Explain to the students that they are going to join all the little snakes together to make one giant snake. Instruct the students that they must count aloud in 10s as the snakes are joined together. Before commencing the task, ask the students to predict how many cubes there will be in the long snake. Check these predictions at the end of the activity.
Teacher Instruction
- Display and discuss slide 24 of the Skip Counting by 2s, 5s and 10s PowerPoint. Highlight that when we skip count by 10s, we only say every tenthย number.
- Display slide 25 and ask the students to count the pattern of circled numbers. Invite the students to share what they notice about the ten skip pattern. Record their responses on the board.
- Provide each student with a copy of a Hundredsย Board. Ask the students to circle the ten skip pattern on their hundreds board. Once they have finished, say the pattern aloud as a class.
- Display and discuss slide 26. Encourage the students to use their hundreds board to complete the activity as a class. Check the answers on slide 27.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Display slide 28 and discuss the activity.
- Place the students into pairs and provide each pair with a set of theย Skip Counting by 10s Dominoesย to match up.
- Once the students have matched up the dominoes, provide each pair with a set of Skip Counting by 10s Robot Strips. Monitor and support the students as they complete the ten skip patterns on each strip. Encourage the students to use the blank strip to create their own ten skip pattern.
- As a class, share and discuss the answers to the skip counting by 10s robot strips.
Wrapping Up
- As a class, play a game of ‘Sam-Yuk-Gu’, skip counting by 10s and clapping on every tenth number.
Differentiation
Extending Students
- Pair more capable students with less confident students during the independent activity so they may act as peer tutors.
Supporting Students
- Invite less confident students to play 'Sam-Yuk-Gu' in a small groupย with the teacher or teacher aide.
