Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Students watch and sing along to the Counting by 5s Song video on YouTube. At the end of the video, ask the students:
- What type of skip pattern did we sing along to?
- As we were counting, how many numbers did we skip at a time?
- When might you use skip counting by 5s in everyday life?
- Ask the students to stand in a circle. Invite the students to put their hand up, like they are about to give a ‘high-five’. Inform the students that you will be coming around the circle to give them all a ‘high-five’. Instruct the students that they must count aloud by 5s as each ‘high-five’ is received. Before commencing the task, ask the students to predict which number will be reached. Check these predictions at the end of the activity.
Teacher Instruction
- Display and discuss slide 19 of the Skip Counting by 2s, 5s and 10s PowerPoint. Highlight the fact that when we skip count by 5s, we only say every fifth number.
- Display slide 20 and ask the students to count the pattern of circled numbers. Invite the students to share what they notice about the five skip pattern. Record their responses on the board.
- Provide each student with a copy of a Hundredsย Board. Ask the students to circle the five skip pattern on their hundreds board. Once they have finished, say the pattern aloud as a class.
- Display and discuss slide 21. Encourage the students to use their hundreds board to complete the activity as a class. Check the answers on slide 22.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Display slide 23 and discuss the activity.
- Place the students into pairs and provide each pair with a set of the Skip Counting byย 5s Dominoesย to match up.
- Once the students have matched up the dominoes, provide each pair with a set of Skip Counting by 5s Robot Strips. Monitor and support the students as they complete the five skip patterns on each strip. Encourage the students to use the blank strip to create their own five skip pattern.
- As a class, share and discuss the answers to the skip counting by 5s robot strips.
Wrapping Up
- As a class, play a game of ‘Sam-Yuk-Gu’, skip counting by 5s and clapping on every fifth number.
