Unlock critical thinking skills by analysing advertisements in different contexts with this engaging inquiry-based project designed to deepen students’ media literacy.
Analysing Advertisements to Understand Context and Audience
The way an advertisement is created and presented can vary dramatically depending on several different contexts. These contexts shape how messages are crafted, which techniques are used, and how the product or service is positioned. This project encourages students to investigate how different contexts (cultural, social, historical, geographical, editorial and target audience) can influence the techniques used by advertisers to sell their products.
To complete this media literacy project, students will compare two advertisements for a similar service or product that were created in and shaped by different contexts. They will then use the provided organisers to explore how context affects the techniques advertisers use to target different audiences. Students will present their findings as a slideshow or a compare and contrast report.
