Visual Literacy – Pictures and Text Comprehension

Support young learners as they learn to combine text and images to build meaning with this engaging set of Image Detective task cards. Students read a short passage, examine the accompanying image, and answer the question: “What details does the image add to the text?”

This simple routine strengthens comprehension, observation skills and multimodal understanding, directly supporting AC9E1LA08 and AC9E2LA08, which focus on interpreting visual information alongside written language.

Each card includes a short, age‑appropriate text paired with a clear visual prompt. Students practise identifying extra details, clarifying meaning and expanding their understanding using images. Examples include:

  • Everyday scenes such as children playing a card game, visiting a farm or packing a snack
  • Science concepts like circuits, volcanoes, life cycles and weather
  • Data displays including bar graphs, tables and percentages
  • Narrative moments such as camping, reading at bedtime or exploring magical lands

Across the set, students learn to notice details, connect information and explain how images enhance or extend the written text, key skills in early visual literacy.

Perfect for Year 1 & Year 2 Comprehension Lessons

These cards are ideal for literacy rotations, small‑group instruction, or whole‑class warm‑ups. They support students to:

  • Identify information in images.
  • Explain how visuals add meaning to a text.
  • Build vocabulary through multimodal texts.
  • Strengthen inferencing and observation skills.

Aligned to AC9E1LA08 and AC9E2LA08, this resource helps students confidently interpret images and understand how pictures and words work together, an essential foundation for reading comprehension in the early years.
