Inference Cut and Paste Worksheet 

Use this ‘I Can Make Inferences’ graphic organiser with your early readers for an independent activity or small group work during reading groups. They pick from 15 black and white images and then glue two of them on their graphic organiser. They have to write down clues, what they know and what their inference is about what they can infer from the picture. 

For example:

• It’s a windy day because the boy is flying a kite.
• The boy has bird food in his hands because the birds are close to him.
• The children are enjoying the watermelon because they are both smiling.

Answers may vary but if they can make an inference and give clues to why they infer that – they’re on the right track!

Making Inferences from Images

Making inferences from images helps students develop essential comprehension skills by encouraging them to look closely, think critically, and draw conclusions based on visual clues. This strategy supports early readers in understanding that meaning is not always directly stated and can be built through observation and prior knowledge. It also strengthens oral and written language skills as students practise explaining their thinking clearly. Over time, this skill transfers directly to reading comprehension, helping students become more confident and thoughtful readers.
