How Do You Persuade Your Parents? Teach Persuasive Writing Through a Real-Life Scenario

It would have to be said that most children would jump at the opportunity to change a household rule or two. Thanks to this ‘Persuade Your Parents’ writing project from Teach Starter, they now have the perfect opportunity to do just that!

In this persuasive writing project, students will have the opportunity to present a well-reasoned argument to their parent or caregiver about a household rule they believe should change. They will be encouraged to use strong reasoning, clear organisation and persuasive language to explain their viewpoint. Students may use one of the suggested rule changes provided or write about one of their own choosing.

By grounding the task in something students care deeply about (like bedtime, screen time or not having to eat their vegetables), this resource immediately boosts engagement. Students quickly recognise that persuasive writing isn’t just a school exercise – it’s something they already do in their everyday lives. Now, instead of pleading, “But it’s SO unfair!”, students can learn how to craft respectful, reasoned arguments that adults will actually listen to!

The ‘Persuade Your Parents’ persuasive writing project booklet contains everything your students will need to successfully complete the activity. It downloads as a quick-print PDF or editable Google Slides file.

How to Persuade Your Parents Using Purpose, Audience, Text Structure and Language Features

Establishing a clear purpose for writing, appealing to the target audience, applying a clear organisational structure and making intentional language choices are essential to the overall effectiveness of any text. This project teaches students the importance of these four components in persuasive writing in the following ways:

    • Purpose – Students must clearly identify the household rule they wish to change and articulately explain why this change matters.
    • Audience – The text is aimed specifically at parents and carers, which helps students make conscious choices about how to build their argument.
    • Structure – Students must apply persuasive structure by including an introduction, three strong arguments, a counterargument and a conclusion.
    • Language Features – Students will experiment with persuasive techniques like modality, emotive language, rhetorical questions and cause-and-effect reasoning.
