Use These Persuasive Writing Paragraph Starters in Multiple Ways

These versatile persuasive writing paragraph starters can be used in a number of ways to engage your students and inspire their persuasive writing. Here are a few ideas from our experienced team:

  1. Lesson Warm-Up – During your persuasive writing unit, display a paragraph starter on the board at the beginning of each lesson. Give your students a time limit to write a short and sharp persuasive paragraph using the featured topic sentence. Afterwards, have volunteers share their writing.
  2. Mini Debate – Use the paragraph starters for persuasive writing to inspire mini debates in your classroom. Pair the students up and assign sides (agreeing with the topic or disagreeing with it). Give your students a time limit to have a conversation in which each student argues the viewpoint they have been assigned.
  3. Extended Writing – Once students have written their paragraphs using the selected topic sentence, have them extend their writing by constructing an entire persuasive text on the topic containing an introduction, three distinct arguments and a conclusion.
