Build Storytelling Skills Through Visual Narrative Activities

Sequencing images to form a story is a powerful way to develop students’ understanding of narrative structure.

This visual narrative resource has been created by our team to give students the opportunity to explore how the sequencing of images in a text can affect meaning. The set includes three different visual narrative worksheets, each featuring four illustrations that can be sequenced in any order. After deciding on the order of the pictures, students answer reflective questions about their story and explore how changing the image order could alter the storyline.

This resource downloads as an easy-print PDF or editable Google Slides file.

Develop Critical Thinking Through Visual Narrative Analysis

Do not be fooled by the simplicity of this resource… It is much more than just a sequencing worksheet! By engaging with this resource, your students will:

  • Practise logical sequencing of images
  • Deepen their understanding of narrative structure
  • Develop and write a short story
  • Reflect on alternative story paths

Looking for some ideas about how you might use these visual narrative worksheets with your students? One suggestion from our teacher team is to use all three sets in the resource: one for a modelled, whole-class activity, one for a small-group or pair activity and one for independent practice. This means that the amount of support is gradually withdrawn as the students become more confident with the process of sequencing the images and analysing the resulting stories.

Use the Download button to access your preferred file format. (Note: You will be prompted to make a copy of the Google Slides template on your personal drive before accessing it.)

As this resource contains three versions of the visual narrative activity, we suggest printing one copy, then selecting the pages you wish to photocopy for your students.
