A Hands-On Building 3D Shapes Activity

Bring hands-on learning to life with this engaging 2-page building 3d shapes activity that invites students to explore famous real-world structures through creative modeling! Using cubes or other building materials, students will replicate iconic landmarks like the Pyramids of Giza, the Great Wall of China, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

As they build and sketch their creations, they’ll strengthen spatial reasoning, observation skills, and fine motor coordination. Reflective questions encourage deeper thinking and connection to real-world architecture. This building 3D shapes activity is perfect for STEM lessons, early geometry units, or as an interactive extension activity!

Extend This 3D Shape Building Activity

Ready to take this 3D shape building activity a step further? Challenge students to design their own landmark!

Directions:

  1. Students use cubes to design their very own landmark or architectural structure.
  2. Students name their design, describe its purpose, and list the 3D shapes it resembles or is comprised of.
  3. Students sketch their creation, adding background details that provide information on where the structure would be located.
  4. Ask students to present their structures to the class if time allows!
