Dividing Decimals by Whole Numbers Worksheets

Just like there is more than one way to peel an orange (or bake a cake, or shine a coin, or catch a rabbit), there is also more than one way to divide decimals by whole numbers!

Teaching multiple strategies for performing operations is essential for our students’ mathematical development. It ensures that they have a range of tools in their strategy tool belt which can be drawn upon when needed.

This dividing decimals by whole numbers worksheet pack focuses on two main strategies: using visual models and using the standard algorithm. Just in case you need a brush-up, here’s a brief overview of these two methods:

  1. Visual Models – Using a hundreds grid to represent hundredths, students color the model to represent the decimal dividend. They then use the whole number divisor to break the decimal into equal groups. The answer is the number of hundredths in one of the groups.
  2. Standard Algorithm – Students set up the question as they would with whole numbers. It is important to place the decimal point in the quotient space directly above where it sits in the dividend. The question can then be answered using the same method that would be used for whole number division.

Using this worksheet pack, students will be given the opportunity to practice these two methods. The pack contains:

  • 2 x visual model practice pages with answers
  • 2 x standard algorithm practice pages with answers

This worksheet pack downloads as a printable PDF or an editable Google Slides file.

Why Teach Multiple Strategies for Dividing Decimals?

While your students may develop a preference for one of the above methods, it’s important that they become proficient with both. Teaching different strategies equips students with a toolkit for solving all kinds of mathematical problems involving a range of operations. They can approach a problem in multiple ways, choosing the method that best suits the complexity of the task or their own comfort level. This flexibility is crucial for developing adaptive problem-solving skills that extend beyond the classroom and into real-world applications.
