Use this estimation activity to give your students practice estimating space, converting measurements, and problem solving.
A Multi-Standard Estimation Activity
Bring real-world math into your classroom with this estimation activity! This two-part worksheet set encourages students to think critically and apply math in meaningful contexts.
- Worksheet 1:
Students estimate, measure, and calculate how many 2-inch tiles are needed to cover classroom and gym walls. They’ll compare their estimates to actual calculations and reflect on their reasoning. - Worksheet 2:
Students scale up their thinking to estimate how much space 1 million tiles would occupy. They’ll convert square inches to square feet, evaluate real-world locations that could fit the tiles, and creatively represent their own ideas.
Using Our Estimation Problem Solving Worksheets
These estimation problem-solving worksheets are ideal for math centers or enrichment activities. They promote mathematical thinking, measurement conversion skills, and problem-solving. Here are some other ways to use this estimation activity as well:
Project-Based Learning: Use this worksheet set in a measurement or estimation unit, tying it in to architecture and art by letting students plan and decorate a building.
Community Service Project: Use this estimation activity to introduce a community service project where students are tasked with designing and beautifying a space.
Assessment: Use the first worksheet as an assessment to gauge measurement conversion, computation, and problem-solving abilities.
