Practice the Ideas In This Powers of 10 Anchor Chart Set
In addition to hanging these powers of 10 anchor charts in your classroom, make sure to incorporate fun, hands-on activities to help students master multiplying and dividing by powers of 10. Here are three ideas you can try!
- Decimal Die Game: Students roll a die to create a base number (e.g., roll 4, 2, 1 → 421) and then spin a spinner or draw cards labeled ×10, ×100, ÷1000, etc. Finally, students solve the problem they have created. This game can be played in partners or small groups.
- Place Value Hop: Great for kinesthetic learners! Create a large floor place value chart with tape (ones, tens, hundreds, tenths, etc.) and give students number cards to hold. Call out a direction like “Multiply by 100,” and students act as the decimal and physically shift to the correct spot.
- Move the Decimal Flash: Give students whiteboards and dry erase markers. Show a number on the board and call out a direction like “multiply by 10” or “divide by 1000.” Students quickly write their answer and “Flash” it to you once they are finished. Great for review!
The Google Slides version of this multiplying and dividing powers of 10 anchor chart set is editable, so you could also have students create a version of this set for their own personal use.
