Explore Narrative Paragraphs with Your Students

Narrative sequencing is the ability to identify and organize events in the order they happen within a story. When students can recognize the sequence of events, they are better equipped to follow storylines, infer meaning and construct their own coherent pieces of writing.

This hands-on sorting activity has been designed by our teacher team to enhance your students’ sequencing skills when it comes to narrative paragraphs. The resource features six paragraphs, each split into five sentences. Students are tasked with reading the sentences and rearranging them into their correct sequence to form a coherent paragraph. Additionally, a complete version of each paragraph is provided for reference, ensuring students have the support they need to succeed.

This resource downloads as a full-color, quick-print PDF or editable Google Slides file. It provides a low-preparation literacy activity that can be used for whole-class, small-group or independent work.

Build Strong Literacy Skills Through Paragraph Sequencing

Developing paragraph sequencing skills supports students across multiple areas of literacy learning. As students practice arranging sentences into meaningful order, they strengthen both their reading comprehension and writing abilities. Here’s how:

Benefits for Reading:

  • Helps students identify the beginning, middle and end of a narrative.
  • Strengthens comprehension by encouraging students to track events and ideas.
  • Develops students’ ability to recognise sequence clues and transition words.
  • Improves understanding of cause-and-effect relationships within texts.
  • Supports deeper engagement with stories.

Benefits for Writing:

  • Encourages students to organize their ideas logically.
  • Helps students understand how to construct well-structured paragraphs.
  • Builds confidence when writing narratives independently.
  • Supports the development of cohesive and connected writing.
  • Reinforces the importance of sequencing events clearly for readers.
