Count Back to Subtract! Subtraction Fact Game Boards

The “count backward” strategy, also known as counting down or subtracting by counting back, is a method used to teach subtraction to young learners. It is beneficial because it helps children develop a conceptual understanding of subtraction and provides a visual and concrete approach to solving subtraction problems.

Use this board game as a math center activity to practice the “Counting Back 2 & 3” subtraction strategy with your students.

A fun game played in pairs where the aim is to be the first player to reach the Finish line.

How to Play Your New Subtraction Game

  • Students each select a counter and place it on the ‘Start’ line.
  • They take turns rolling the die or spinning the spinner provided and follow the directions.
  • If they move forward, they must answer the number sentence they land on.
  • Correct answers can keep the counter in the same place. Incorrect answers move their counter back to the previous place on the game board.

An instruction page with a die is provided with this resource.
