Procedural Text Examples for Teaching Purpose, Structure and Language Features
Procedure texts are an important part of the elementary ELA curriculum, helping students learn how to follow and communicate clear, sequential instructions. From recipes and craft activities to science experiments, students encounter procedure texts regularly both inside and outside the classroom. Understanding the purpose, structure and language features of these texts helps students read and write them more effectively.
This resource pack includes three age-appropriate procedural texts written by our experienced team of teachers. The resource also features a two-page analysis worksheet to guide students through analyzing the purpose, audience, text and visual features, and language features of the sample texts. Due to its generic nature, this worksheet could also be used with any sample procedural text.
The procedural text examples in this pack are:
- How to Make Slime
- How to Make a Newspaper Pirate Hat
- How to Build a Worm Farm
This resource downloads as a full-color or black-and-white printable PDF. The worksheets can also be downloaded as an editable Google Slides file.
Created with busy teachers in mind, this resource provides a simple yet effective way to teach procedure texts without extensive preparation.
