Tools to Make Comparing and Contrasting Texts a Breeze!

As students move into upper primary school and towards high school, the ability to compare and contrast literary texts becomes increasingly important.

The Teach Starter team has created the ultimate pack of comparing texts graphic organisers to help your students visually map out the similarities and differences across two texts they have read. With 13 different options to choose from, you’re sure to find the perfect template to suit your lesson plan. Each graphic organiser is different and contains a unique combination of textual elements for students to compare and analyse. Some of the literary components featured in this pack include:

  • Effectiveness of Solutions

This set of comparing and contrasting texts graphic organisers downloads as an easy-print PDF or editable Google Slides file. Read on to learn more about how to use this versatile resource in your literature lessons!

Flexible Ways to Compare and Contrast Text in Your Literacy Lessons

This versatile resource provides multiple teaching and learning options when exploring cross-text comparisons with your students. With 13 different graphic organisers to choose from, you can tailor your approach to suit various learning styles and teaching contexts. Here are a few ideas from our team:

  1. Whole-Class Text Comparisons – After shared reading of two different texts, project one of the organisers onto your smartboard. Work together as a class to chart character traits, plot developments or thematic connections across two class texts.
  2. Small Group Activities – After shared reading of two different texts, place the students into groups and assign each group a different graphic organiser. Students can work together to complete the analysis, then report their findings back to the class.
  3. Individual Reading Tasks –  Allow students to independently explore similarities and differences between two self-selected texts, using an organiser or organisers of their choice to analyse and compare key features.
