Strengthen oral language skills with this I Spy Oral Language Activity.
Oral Language Activity – I Spy: Enhance Vocabulary and Oral Language Skills
This oral language activity has been designed by a teacher to boost vocabulary and strengthen your students’ oral language skills by encouraging students to observe, describe, and interact with objects in a fun, interactive way. Print an enlarged copy of the I Spy Objects Jars and display it prominently, invite students to take turns describing the objects they see.
This hands-on approach makes language learning both visual, verbal and most importantly – fun!
Engaging Oral Language Development Activities Year 1
Here are some different ways you can use these oral language activities year 1 in the classroom:
- Simply take turns in describing and articulating descriptions of objects.
- Ask students to draw an object form the jar and then use key words to describe it.
- Have students work in pairs to discuss their favourite objects from the jar, using descriptive language to explain why they chose them.
- Display a partially covered object and challenge students to guess and describe what they think it is.
- Encourage students to select an object and create a short story around it.
- In digital form, remove one object form the jar and have students describe what is missing – this also fosters memory and descriptive language.
