Lesson 3: Using Homophones
A 60 minute lesson in which students will identify and use the correct spelling of homophones in context.
This lesson plan includes the following resources:
Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Play the I Have, Who Has? Homophones Game as a class. After the students have played the game once, time them. Encourage them to beat their previous time.
Teacher Instruction
- Display slides 32-36 of Homophones PowerPoint – Lower Grades. As a class, decide which is the correct spelling of each object.
- Read through the remaining pages of the Homophones Workbook – Lower Grades. Encourage the students to ask questions about the tasks in the booklet.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Allow the students to work through their workbook at their own pace. Monitor and support the students as required.
Wrapping Up
- Ask the students to report back on their progress. Discuss any challenging questions from the workbook as a class. Some students may require an additional lesson to complete the workbook.
Differentiation
Extending Students
- Allow any fast finishers to play a game of Homophones Bingo in small groups.
Supporting Students
- Allow less confident students to work with a partner, or in a small group with the teacher, for additional assistance.
