5th Grade Math Test – Place Value

Assessing student understanding of grade-level concepts is essential to the learning cycle. Once students have had an opportunity to practice and apply these skills, it is essential to have a tool to use to measure student progress. If you are looking for a tool to assess student understanding of place value, you have come to the right place!

Teach Starter has created this comprehensive math assessment for your 5th-grade students. With this assessment, students will demonstrate an understanding of decimal place values. This math test requires students to analyze and solve a variety of word problems, justify their reasonings, and use tables to answer questions.

This assessment covers the following place value topics:

  • Rounding decimals to the nearest tenth or hundredth
  • Comparing and ordering decimals
  • Representing the value of a digit in decimals through the thousandths place using expanded notation and numerals

An answer key is included with your download to make grading fast and easy!

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

Based on the results of this test, students can complete enrichment tasks covering the topics in this unit, such as projects. Let students who did well on the assessment create a board game or digital game about the same concepts to share with the class.

For students who need a bit of support, consider completing this assessment in a small group or 1-on-1 setting. Additionally, invite students to reference previous assignments, posters, or anchor charts.
