Strengthen Those Math Muscles – Addition Strategies

Are you currently going through the process of teaching the different addition strategies to your students? This set of addition strategy mats focuses on part/part/whole and tens frames, using the strip diagram model and drawing a model to allow students to see how several strategies can be used to solve simple addition problems.

This resource includes two sets: one with addition problems up to 10 and another with problems up to 20. Whether your students are just beginning to build their number sense or are ready for a challenge, you’ll be able to easily meet them where they are. Perfect for supporting a range of learning levels in your classroom!

Why Teaching Multiple Addition Strategies is a Must

Teaching multiple strategies for solving addition problems isn’t just about variety—it’s about building real number sense. When students explore more than one way to solve a problem, they deepen their understanding of how numbers work together and gain flexibility in their thinking. This helps them move beyond memorization and toward true mathematical reasoning.

This resource supports that deeper learning by giving students opportunities to try out and compare different strategies in a structured, supportive format. Whether they’re using tens frames, drawing models, or breaking numbers apart, students begin to see that math isn’t one-size-fits-all—and that they have choices as problem solvers.

It is advised to print the mats and either laminate them or slide them into a dry erase sleeve so that students can use whiteboard markers and rub them off when finished. The number cards and fact cards can be printed on cardstock for durability purposes.
