A work mat to explore regrouping when subtracting.
Use this resource when teaching subtraction with regrouping.
Students use the mat to create two-digit numbers with base 10 blocks and then regroup as necessary.
This mat is perfect for reinforcing the strategy of regrouping when subtracting. It is an ideal resource to use when working on mental math in preparation for learning to write the standard algorithm.
Print and place the mats in a dry erase pocket for students to use repeatedly. Alternatively, provide each student with a black-and-white version to paste into their workbooks.
Common Core Curriculum alignment
Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones; e.g., 706 equals 7 hundreds, 0 tens, and 6 ones. Understand the following as special cases:
Read and write numbers to 1000 using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form.
Add up to four two-digit numbers using strategies based on place value and properties of operations.
Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
